Brigantine Fire Department Tips: How to Avoid Frozen Pipes

The Brigantine Fire Department has started to see calls involving water leaks inside unoccupied homes and reminds residents about the menace of frozen pipes. We recommend doing all of the following every fall to winterize your home.

  • Drain all outside water sources such as sprinkler systems, showers and garden hose outlets. If you haven’t already done so, you should look to do this prior to the next arrival of freezing temperatures.
  • If your home will be left unoccupied, make sure to leave the thermostat set at 50 degrees or higher to prevent pipes from freezing.
  • During extreme cold spells of three days or more of continuous below-freezing temperatures, make sure the thermostat is set at 60 degrees or higher.
  • If temperatures below freezing are expected, keep faucet taps open to a continual slow stream, about the size of a thin drinking straw, to keep the water flowing in the pipes and help prevent still water from freezing.
The members of the Brigantine Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and happy New Year.
