According to their press release, The Mercato Market expects to attract between 2,500 and 5,000 people a day for its markets, according to its business plan, set up over 10.4 acres around the grassy plaza between the racetrack building and parking lot.
These markets would include space for as many as 650 vendors and operate on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., May through December. Business Operations Manager Dirk DaCosta said he expected alcohol would be served under the racetrack’s license. The goal, DaCosta said, is a new kind of flea market. The British native said he was inspired by the long-running weekly markets in the Camden Town part of London, which offer a wide variety of clothes, food and other goods. It is a major tourist attraction.
