Press of AC & Beachcomber For Sale

The Press of Atlantic City has put the daily newspaper and its affiliated operations, including the Brigantine Beachcomber News, up for sale. The owners are Pittsburgh-based Abarta Inc.

Why are they selling? They want to focus on businesses with higher growth potential. Abarta’s other main businesses are soda, oil and gas exploration and ethnic frozen food.

The faltering newspaper has been in the same family for 60 years. As part of the changes, Jim Hopson is the new publisher, replacing Keith Dawn.

Abarta is selling all of The Press Media Group, which includes The Press, and At The Shore; the weekly Hometown; Brigantine Beachcomber, SundaySaver; PressXtra; Real Estate Monthly; and the digital platforms, PressofAtlanticCity.com and AtlanticCityInsiders.com.

The newspaper started as The Daily Press, back in 1895. Offices and production have been in Pleasantville since 1970.

  1. The Brigantine Beachcomber is owned by Catamaran Media, which is partially owned by Abarta. Catamaran Media is the company that publishes The Currents, which the Brigantine Beachcomber is a part of.

    1. Thx Mary. Theoretically, the Beachcomber….and Abarta’s share of Catamaran Media….is also involved in some way…with the potential sales transaction?
