Brigantine City Council talks Dog Park, 4×4 Price Hikes, Golf Course.

Highlights from Brigantine City Council meeting this past Wednesday night, July 17. Click thru to see video clips from the council meeting. It was a standing-room-only crowd starting off with a proclamation honoring Fire Chief Holl who recently passed suddenly. Chief Holl’s family joined Mayor Guenther for this honor.

Talk of raising the price of 4×4 beach permits. A very preliminary discussion, but you could tell it was a hot potato. Early bird pricing could move from $160 to $185. Regular pricing could move from $175 – $250.

Our confidence level is currently low in regards to council’s ability to financially, yet prudently, leverage this city beach asset to the max.

Council approved new dog park, as long as money can be found. Park could move to land next to Brigantine Beach Community Center. This infringes a bit, on Brigantine Rams’ football practice field. New park could be built in four weeks, as soon as council confirms location, size and funding. City Manager; Jen Blumenthal, said new dog park could cost about $25,000 to build.

Ron Weiss digs deep for doggy dollars once again. Ron already made $20,000 donation to build original dog park six years ago. Weiss volunteered at least another $10,000 towards the construction of a new dog park, if grant or other monies can be found. Councilman Simpson also ponied up $1,000 towards a matching grant. Maddog Mike Morgan, head coach of the local football team, talked about the team’s need for the soon-to-be dog park field and was worried about safety issues concerning the dogs.

Two bond ordinances were discussed. One bond would be for the Brigantine Golf Course. $281,000 is needed for replacement maintenance equipment destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and improvements to course / clubhouse. Councilman Kern smartly questioned Blumenthal about responsibility for the loss, and why the equipment wasn’t moved to higher ground….especially since there was a 72-hour advance notice of the storm.

Mayor not happy with “sick-time” buyouts and downsizing of DPW city services. Watch Video Clips Below:

  1. HOW CAN YOU THINK ABOUT AN INCREASE IN THE 4X4 PERMITS WHEN MOST OF THE SUMMER, THE NORTH END IS CLOSED FOR THE PLOVERS?

ALSO FOR THE PRICE THAT WE PAY NOW, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE THE FRONT BEACH FOR FISHING WITH 4X4’s FROM JAN TO MAY…. AND FROM SEPT TO DEC.

PLUS THE 4X4 PERMIT PRICE IS TOO HIGH NOW COMPARED TO OTHER TOWNS

  2. We will no longer get the 4×4 permit. They should be arrested for stealing our money…Delaware knows how to treat their people:

You receive a license plate and a decal. The decal also enables the vehicle to gain entrance into the other state parks charging a daily entrance fee. Permits are in effect from January 1 through December 31. Participants should acquaint themselves with the special regulations for this sport.

  3. If they’re going to raise the price of the 4×4 permits and continue to sell an unlimited number of them , they need to open up more of the beach to 4×4’s. There’s not enough space at the cove and the jhettto for everyone they sell permits to.
