FEMA Awards Brigantine with 45% Insurance Reduction

Brigantine homeowners were very happy to hear that our town achieved the highest level of FEMA compliance…and will receive a 45 percent reduction in flood insurance premiums. FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Community Rating System (CRS), are voluntary incentive programs that recognize and encourage community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum national flood plain requirements. Flood insurance premium rates are then discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS:

  • Reduce flood damage to insurable property
  • Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of NFIP
  • Encourage comprehensive approach to floodplain mgmt

The rating system classes for local communities are based on 18 creditable activities, organized under four categories:

  • Public Information
  • Mapping and Regulations
  • Flood Damage Reduction
  • Flood Preparedness

Special thanks to those who worked so hard in getting Brigantine this much needed reduction in flood insurance premiums. I guess that’s why they call this community; Brig Strong.

  1. Same question here – we were told by our insurance carrier that when we go to renew it should automatically be reflected. Our renewal is now due and still no change. Any information on when this will be adopted would be good to know. Thanks for all that Brigantine Now does for the island

  2. Our renewal rates were a bit higher than last year. Renewal date was January 8th.
I checked the flood manual on line and see no rate reduction for Brigantine.
