A certified petition circulated by local citizens forced council to decide on the issue. The Democratic majority of council had originally voted to keep the interim post and increase the position’s pay. Sensing a changing tide of public sentiment, many council members have waffled over the past few months. Some openly state their comfort with potentially keeping chiefs.
